Training Required to be a Recruitment Consultant

The main benefit of setting up your own recruitment agency is that you do not need any formal qualifications! Some people tend to have degrees so that they can specialize in a particular sector but if you have been working in a certain industry for a number of years then that will benefit you far more.

If you do not feel that you have enough experience for setting up your own recruitment agency then there are a number of options for you. The Recruitment and Employment Federation (REC) offer a wide variety of training courses. The details of all the courses available are on the following website:

Skills Required to be a Recruitment Consultant

Although you do not require any specific training to be a recruitment consultant, you do need to have or develop key skills when carrying out the recruitment process. These include:

  • Ability and drive to work long hours to reach targets and gain commission
  • Ability to make new contacts for new business through cold calling and other methods
  • High attention to detail (ie when communicating with the clients make sure everything they are looking for in the candidate is noted)
  • Extremely good listening skills
  • Excellent written English required when advertising vacancies
  • Good sense of judgement (ie when short listing candidates for clients you have to judge who will be the best people suited to the position)
  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment (ie when clients want the position filled they want the best possible candidates in the quickest amount of time)
  • Excellent interviewing techniques
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ideally have a sales background
  • Be persuasive and persistent
  • Be able to cope with pressure
  • Be confident
  • Have people skills and excellent customer service
  • Ability to prioritize
