In order to answer the questions on how many people are living within the area and what they do it would be beneficial to use local council or government statistics on the Internet. By doing so you can establish the type of people that are looking for jobs.
Clients

Clients Clients are the businesses already operating in your target area. It is vital that you research businesses within your area thoroughly. The following questions have to be ... What industry sector do they work ... (e.g. catering, ... Do they use recruitment agencies at the ... Who are the recruitment agencies that work for ... What type of workers do they look ... In order to get answers to these questions you could do it in a number of ways. A good place to start is using your local directory and phoning up businesses and asking them. However, more often than not businesses are far too busy to answer to people that they do not even know. Therefore a better way would be to check on their websites or even face to face! That means the potential client can not put the phone down on you or ignore you! Then by ascertaining the answers to these questions you can quickly determine what businesses you can target and what businesses probably will not be worth your while. For example, if you find that a business only deals with one recruitment agency and has been for the past 15 years then it is unlikely that they will work with any other agency. However, if you find out that a local company always uses a variety of recruitment agencies then you have the opportunity to target that company. Also by finding out more information on the different types of businesses within your target area you can start dividing the businesses up into their industry sector and store these details. This will make it easier when it comes to targeting a set number of businesses within a particular industry sector.

Research

Market Research Researching the recruitment market is an absolute vital part before setting up your recruitment agency. It is essential to fully research the recruitment market to establish a number of aspects. Firstly, it is essential to decide in which area you are going to operate in and try attract business from. The area in which your premises are may contribute immensely to this decision. Mainly because whenever you are recruiting for a position the possible candidates have to travel to wherever your agency is located. Therefore, there is no point in targeting an area 50 miles away because this will have an effect on people travelling for an initial interview. It is important to think about targeting locally in this way especially when your just starting your own business because you need to think ahead to things like advertising costs of vacancies. If you are working as a recruitment consultant for a local company then you can advertise in local papers which will not cost you that much. Whereas, if you are working with a national company then you will have to advertise the vacancies nationally which will cost you a tremendous amount of money. Furthermore, you may also put candidates forward for a vacancy that they do not get and that means that your recruitment agency will not get paid! Thus, it is crucial to think locally this means less risk and less money! After establishing in which area you are going to operate in, it is vital that you identify who the target market is going to be. This will involve a vast amount of researching into the type of businesses and the type of candidates that are living and operating in your target area/location. In order to make the researching easier you could break the target market up into 3 different groups. Namely, Clients, Candidates and Recruitment Agencies. Then you must research these different groups individually to see who you intend to target. Clients Candidates Recruitment Agencies Having fully researched these 3 different groups then you should have an idea of who you are going to target and why.

Scams

Scams In the recruitment industry you need to be aware of a few scams that employers may pull on you. Employers may say that the temporary worker that you provided is not working properly so wants to sack them which means you have to give them money back. However, what you may find is that they have not really sacked them and they are still working for them but you have lost out by giving them money back. This sort of scam does not happen all the time so do not let it put you off, you just need to be aware of the scams that can happen.

Start up costs

Start up Costs The main start up cost most definitely would be the cost of premises for the recruitment agency. Although you do have the option of working from home, it may not be advisable if you are wanting to make a good impression with your clients and the candidates that you will be interviewing. The cost of premises will depend on one thing namely ... the location of where you wish to do business. Obviously if you wish to operate in a city centre then it will cost you additional money, however, if you choose to operate out with a city centre it will cost you less. An absolute must though is to have well designed premises that create the right image to clients and to possible workers. In order to create the right image you may need to refurbish the premises. It is a necessity to have a reception area and a meeting room so that candidates can be greeted and to enable interviews to be held. It will also be vital to furnish the premises in a modern and professional way, by introducing office furniture. This may include office desks, seating, storage systems and lockable filing cabinets. The meeting rooms must also be furnished with a table and chairs and it will also be a good idea to have a comfortable seating area with table and the reception area. The cost of all these necessities varies immensely depending on how much you which to spend on each product, however the most important thing to remember is that you are trying to create a good impression so that clients and candidates see you as a professional. Thus, the cheapest table and chairs may not be the best option if it falls apart as soon as someone sits on it! Just adopt for the reasonably priced products that do the job. Also, important to remember here as with any business to keep costs to a minimum, therefore do not splash out on heavily priced items either. Additional costs such as a telephone, answering machine, PC and printer will also be vital. You will also need to consider the cost of additional staff that will be needed to run the office whilst you are visiting clients or interviewing candidates.
